“I do choose. Be made clean”

IMG-20160719-WA0008We are well aware of the saying “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” We love to keep our houses, churches, offices and all of nature clean. The state of cleanliness enables us to experience peace within us and outside of us.

In the Gospel reading of the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear about Jesus cleansing the man with leprosy uttering those words “I do choose. Be made clean.” The words of Jesus have authority and command. The effect of it is complete cleansing from leprosy. Though it was forbidden by the Law for a leper (unclean) to approach a man who is considered clean, he approached Jesus and there he was cleansed. As St. Mark says, Jesus was moved with pity.

This Sunday is also celebrated as World Day of the sick. We come across a number of people suffering from various illnesses. The ministry and actions of Jesus inspire us to take care of our brothers and sisters in their dire need of sickness. As followers of Jesus today we value any sort of suffering and enable the suffering person to be united with the Lord who suffered for us. Shall we say with Jesus, “I do choose…”
